May is Mental Health and Wellness Month

May is Mental Health and Wellness Month

May is Mental Health month, and it has never been more important than this year in the midst of our global pandemic. Historically resources and information have focused on the one in five individuals who have a mental health concern in any given year. However, this year IS different. In 2020, we are all struggling with a ‘common enemy.’

This is the first time in many of our lives that we are ALL focused on reducing the pandemic by social distancing and flattening the curve.

There are certainly dire consequences that result from the very important stance we as people are taking against CoVID-19. This includes a significant increase in mental stress, anxiety and additional mental health concerns we are all likely suffering from. It no longer is the ‘one in five’ of the individuals that suffer from mental health concerns. Now it is ALL of us.

So how do we all support each other in a time of need. How do we encourage each other without a hug or a ‘pat on the back.’ We must check on each other.

We must use technology and virtual channels to continue our connections in our community. We have to remain socially distant as we flatten our curve.

However, as we reopen our country and community, we have to remember the guiding principles we have been enduring for the past 6 weeks. We DON’T want to have additional surges or peaks on our community. We must take care of our people who are in need but must do so in socially conscious manners. It is NORMAL to feel stress, angst, and frustration. The whole country is having ‘cabin fever.’ Our kids are not going to school which would typically give us a break.

Everyone is couped up at home and on ‘high alert.’ This is why as May Mental Health month arrives, we must all support each other. In addition, we must plan on getting back in some type of a modified routine. Especially as medical treatment providers and patients. Remember, effective treatments including ketamine infusion for medication-resistant major depression disorder is vital to staying healthy. Here is a great linkto provide mental health screening.

The negative aspect of the current situation is that mental health concerns have not been addressed unless urgent/emergent. We all know there is very much a ‘gray zone’ of what is urgent and what can wait. Therefore many people in the country have been waiting for things to open again, including medical offices and treatment facilities.
