No One Wants to Be Sick – Vitamin C Infusions

No One Wants to Be Sick – Vitamin C Infusions

This is a story familiar to all of us during the winter. Frequency and duration can vary but at some point in time, everyone seems to get sick. Whether it’s a tickle in the throat, a mild headache, or just feeling run down, the common cold is very difficult to avoid. Many people just give it time because with enough time it will go away and get better. But that amount of time can drag on and feel like an eternity. If you’re like me, you just lie in bed and wait for the symptoms to go away. But there is another option, and this time around, I didn’t want to wait around and ruin the holidays. Or rather, my wife did not want to deal with the “man cold/flu” this time and told me to find that other option.

People always say vitamin C can help with colds and viral illnesses, but I never thought about trying it myself. It was the day before my vacation and I felt the dreaded tickle in my throat and felt annoyingly fatigued. I did not want to spend my entire vacation in bed dealing with and recovering from a cold. After a full night’s sleep, I woke up feeling even worse. I decided it was time to try the vitamin C intravenous infusion for myself. I received three grams of vitamin C in 500ml of normal saline. The infusion was quick and painless. I felt about the same during and immediately after theinfusionas I did prior to it. However, I noticed the difference that evening and the next morning. I was not 100% but I was definitely less fatigued. I felt I was getting over my cold already, as it was just starting to rev up. The duration of my viral illness was dramatically shortened.

Vitamin C is found mainly in fruits and vegetables, such as leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, green/red peppers, strawberries, or broccoli. It is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helping the immune system. Studies have shown what I felt first hand, that it can help shorten the duration of a cold. Larger doses help more than smaller doses. The vitamin C has been shown to enhance T cell proliferation which can lyse infected cells and improve B cell synthesis of immunoglobulins to control inflammation. In addition, it inhibits over-activation to control tissue damage. It has a diverse role in maintaining and stimulating the immune system to help fight viral infections. Intestinal absorption and renal excretion limit the bioavailability of oral vitamin C, and bioavailability is reduced with stress, viral illnesses, alcohol intake, etc. Therefore, in times of illness, intravenous administration is the route to use.

No one wants to be sick. But, when you do get sick, you have two options – feel sorry for yourself and sit under a blanket drinking soup and watching Netflix and YouTube and just wait for symptoms to subside, or you can help your immune system fight the infection with an intravenousvitamin C infusion. I was definitely a wait and see person, but after this infusion, I will be getting this vitamin C infusion right away every time I get sick.
